Plastic has been found in every part of our ocean, across every coastline in the world and in the deepest parts of the open ocean. Single-use plastic waste is also threatening our most beloved ocean life -- from seabirds and turtles left starving from stomachs too full of plastic, to whales and seals helplessly wrapped in plastic garbage.

This Valentine's week, we're calling Whole Foods to 'spread the love' to our beaches and sea animals by eliminating single-use plastic in its stores.

Join us: tell Whole Foods to break up with plastic this Valentine's week. Send a letter to the editor today.

  • Our oceans are home to breathtaking seascapes and incredible wildlife -- from underwater gardens of coral and whales breaching the surface just visible from shore, to open stretches of sandy beaches and rocky coastlines spanning as far as the eye can see.

  • About 8 million metric tons of plastic waste enters the world's oceans every year -- the equivalent of dumping a garbage truck worth of plastic into the ocean every minute.

  • No one loves seeing our most pristine ocean places littered with plastic bags or our most iconic ocean life like sea turtles tangled in plastic rings.

  • Single-use plastic packaging is a major source of this pollution.

  • Single-use plastic packaging that is used for just a couple of minutes and then pollutes our rivers and oceans for hundreds of years is unnecessary and downright destructive to our planet.

  • To spread the love to our oceans and wildlife, we need grocery stores like Whole Foods that package our food in disposable plastic including bags, plastic film and wrappers every day to stop the plastic problem at its source.

  • Whole Foods has led the industry in the past: In 2008, they became the first grocer to eliminate plastic bags at checkout. But for the past two years, Whole Foods has received an 'F' from As You Sow for failing to adequately tackle plastics when compared to its competitors.

  • Environment America and coalition partners have campaigned to get Whole Foods to eliminate single-use plastic. The coalition has collected nearly 80,000 petition signatures from consumers in support.

  • It's time for the sustainability-minded grocer to take the lead on environmental protection again in 2022.

  • Whole Foods should eliminate single-use plastic packaging from its stores.
