Tell your U.S. senators: It's time to break free from plastic

Right now, there are more microplastic particles in the ocean than stars in our galaxy. When these trillions of tiny pieces of plastic flood our waterways, they harm our wildlife and push endangered species closer to extinction. As of 2020, all sea turtle species and nearly half of all seabird and marine mammal species have been found to ingest plastic.

With the Break Free From Plastic Pollution Act, we can begin to remove some of these senseless threats by banning the worst single-use plastics.

Already, 15 million metric tons of plastic enter our oceans each year -- equivalent to a full garbage truck dumped into the sea every minute.

And that number is only going up. The United States is now the world's largest contributor of plastic waste, generating nearly 46.5 million tons of plastic each year -- more than all of the waste produced by members of the European Union combined.

When plastic waste enters our waterways, wildlife pay the price. Once in the ocean, plastics present deadly threats for marine life like whales, turtles and dolphins. As of 2020, all sea turtle species and nearly half of all seabird and marine mammal species have been found to ingest plastic.

That's why I support the Break Free From Plastic Pollution Act, which would ban many of the worst single-use plastics from ever being made, enact a moratorium on new plastic-producing facilities, and make plastic producers responsible for the waste their products become. I urge you to support the Break Free From Plastic Pollution Act, too.
