Tell your representative: Protect Chaco Canyon from oil development

Chaco Canyon is full of natural and cultural wonders, from abundant wildlife to spectacular night sky viewing. But most of its surrounding area has been swallowed up by oil and gas operations that threaten to snuff out this park's unique light. Tell your representatives to oppose further industrial development and leave the rest of Chaco Canyon's surrounding land unspoiled.

Chaco Canyon is one of the most naturally and culturally important sites in our National Park System. As one of America's most beloved International Dark Sky Parks, visitors crane their heads to the heavens amidst pristine darkness to observe constellations and the Milky Way. Wildlife like badgers, bobcats and porcupines call the region home, finding sanctuary in habitat away from human development.

But this cherished sanctuary is in danger. Already, more than 90% of the land surrounding Chaco Canyon is leased to oil and gas operations, detrimentally impacting not just the landscape but also the local communities. Only 10% remains unscarred, and if dirty energy companies develop it, their infrastructure, vehicles and subsequent pollution will spoil Chaco Canyon as a haven for species, stargazers, and the tribes connected to the area.

We can't allow even more drilling to encroach on this priceless place with so much lost already. I oppose plans to expand drilling closer to Chaco Canyon and urge you to safeguard this critical desert ecosystem. Its special light must not be snuffed out.
